Mirranda Grace Lawson was 2 years old when she passed away on November 1, 2016 after she chocked on a Popcorn kernel.
On May 11, 2016 her mothers birthday, Mirranda found the Popcorn kernels in the cupboard and she ate one and it became lodged in her windpipe, Mirranda ran in to the living room. Eyes huge, no sound. She couldn't get a breath. Time stopped. Those were the last moments they shared before Mirranda fell to the ground; they swept her mouth, nothing; her father started CPR. The ambulance got there, Mirranda’s heart stopped."
Doctors at VCU Medical Center were able to resuscitate Mirranda, but informed her parents that their youngest of four children had suffered severe, irreparable brain damage. Later, after two months on a ventilator with little improvement, doctors wanted to perform a brain death test - which involved removing the vent to see if Mirranda could breathe on her own before quickly replacing it - but her parents refused and sued the hospital, setting a grueling court case into motion.
Her family wanted to keep her on life support, they knew she would pull through soon.
Mirranda's father tried to keep doctors from pulling life support from his daughter, taking the battle from the hospital to the courthouse. He filed an emergency injunction to buy the two-year-old more time.
After several weeks, a judge ruled VCU Medical Center could move forward with the test to determine if two-year-old Mirranda Grace was brain-dead, but the family's attorney filed an appeal bond to stay the proceedings.
Mirranda deteriorated, and, after her kidneys failed and she passed away.
"This was all caused by a piece of popcorn,". "Please share the danger of popcorn, someone may not know." Toddlers' little mouths and developing chewing skills simply can't yet handle certain shapes. They can't sufficiently grind down food — when they swallow, un-chewed bits can become lodged and restrict the airway.
Tragically, Mirranda Grace Lawson isn't the first child to choke on a piece of popcorn — but with greater awareness, she can be the last.
Rest in peace Mirranda.
